Chapter 8

Mary answered the door early the next morning. Norman entered pushing the coffee tray. His normal cheerful self.

“Good morning, Mrs. W.” He gave Mary a big grin.

“Good morning, Norman.”

“Good to see you this morning.” Norman’s smile faded.

Had compassion flashed in his eyes? Great. Did everyone in town know she wanted to bail yesterday? JT’s door opened. He strolled into the room looking pretty good for a guy who’d stumbled in a few hours before. Mary didn’t know what time he’d gotten up and gone to his room. But the quilt had been folded and put back in place.

“Good morning.” JT’s tone was soft.

She smirked. Maybe his head did hurt just a little. She didn’t know if she should be happy about that or feel sorry for him. “How you feeling this morning?” she asked as loud as she could without screaming.

Okay. Happy, it was.

His forehead wrinkled. “Okay, considering the amount of green beer Norman talked me into consuming last night.”

Mary rolled her eyes. “No way are you going to blame sweet little Norman for you partying too hard.”

“For a giant, your alcohol resistance is awfully low,” Norman stated as he made his way to the door.

JT frowned. “Well, for a little dude, your alcohol tolerance is scary.”

Mary bit back a chuckle.

“It’s the peppermint stick,” Norman said, swinging the door open. He had their full attention. Norman raised a brow. “Gross maybe, but it’s the magic behind our green beer. No hangover.”

Norman pointed to the coffee tray. “Mrs. K took pity on you and sent some headache medicine. Take the medicine, dude. You’ll be glad you did.” He bowed then left them alone.

“Did he really keep a peppermint stick in his beer?”

“Yep. All night.” JT’s eyes narrowed. “I told him it was gross.” He rubbed his forehead with his thumb and forefinger. “Maybe I should have listened to the little sh—Norman.”

JT wasted no time. He hurried over and uncapped the bottle of aspirin and dropped two pills in his mouth. He tipped his head and swallowed. He gulped them down without a chaser.

He poured the coffee. “Sorry I bailed on you last night,” he said without looking up. “To be honest, I was pretty sure you wouldn’t be here this morning when I woke up.”

“You had the third key, remember?”

He winced again. “Sorry.”

May as well leave her options open. He didn’t need to know she’d decided to stay after the talk she’d had with Mrs. Klaus on closure.

Hopefully, Santa’s wife knew what she was talking about. Heck. They did have a ninety-nine point nine percent success rate.

“Actually. I’ve decided to stay a couple more days.” She folded her arms. “You know. Sort out my past, so I can move on with my future.”

JT’s gaze flew to hers. He opened his mouth to speak, but evidently changed his mind.

Mary nibbled on her lip. Hating herself for wanting to know what he’d held back. The words didn’t really matter. She glared at her husband, but he didn’t notice. He’d gone back to his chore of pouring coffee.
